Facebook Gifts
2012-2014
Facebook Gifts was a clumsy attempt at e-commerce by a company desperate to start making money. Users were prompted with a wrapped-present icon to send friends birthday gifts. Facebook took care of the details, and gift-givers didn’t even need the receiver’s post address.
Aside from gift cards for Starbucks and Target, the gifts were mostly sad, kitschy items like a mustache pacifier, a wireless key finder, and a giant edible gummy bear. On top of the terrible choice of gifts, Facebook didn't understand that sending real gifts to people you barely know is awkward. Users ignored Facebook gifts, and the future was discontinued less than two years after launch.
